May

We just completed our insect unit. Your child should be knowledgeable in the three parts of a lady bug, an insect and the life cycle of a butterfly. We were able to watch the the life cycle right before our eyes as we raised five of them in our classroom. We just set them free on Friday. The students also wrote many "how to" books in April which described what they are experts at. They also typed up one and published it with their third grade buddy. We completed our math books and our final math unit test.

Today starts the beginning of our Ocean Unit. In writing we have been creating non fiction books with all the insect facts we have learned about. In math we are now working on word problems and getting quick with our addition facts.

We will be looking forward to our open house on the 20th, our field trip to the Birch Aquarium on the 25th and our singing performance with Mr. Lee on the 28th.

We will be sad to see our student teachers leaving us. Their last day will be this Friday the 14th. They have done a great job and have been very helpful. I know our kids are going to miss them!

Where We Are

Thank you all for coming to the Kindergarten Folk Dance. The kids did great and were so cute and we were so glad you were all there to see!

We are starting a new Social Studies unit today on mapping, it's called "Where We Are" the main ideas we are learning are:
  • Words help people find things.
  • Words can tell how close something is.
  • A globe shows water and land.
  • A map is a drawing of a place.
  • We have traffic symbols.
  • We have map symbols.
  • A model can show a neighborhood.
  • A map can show a neighborhood.
  • A school has workers.
  • A school has many rooms.

We will be learning to jump rope in PE. We have started Music and singing with Mr. Lee and will be having a performance in May. Save the date May 20th as it is Monterey Ridge's Open house. More details to come. Enjoy your spring break and have a great week!

Updates!

54 more days of Kindergarten...but whose counting? In Writing we are learning to use our senses in our writing. We are writing about how things feel, smell and taste which helps us to add details. In Math we are starting subtraction...this is tricky! Keep telling story problems around the house so your student can get the concept. In Science we have started studying plants. Your studnet needs to know the parts of a plant, and that a plant needs water, sun and air to grow.

Today we are doing some lucky charm graphing with our buddies. It will be a great experience working together.

We are also practicing for our big dance show on March 25th at 7:00. Please have your child meet us in the MPR at 6:45pm.

We made it to the 100th day!

Only 80 days left of kindergarten and it's so hard to believe. The kids have grown up so much! Today we did some 100th day activities and wrote about how we would spend 100 dollars if we had it. Tomorrow we will be learning about Ground Hog day. Wednesday we will be talking about Abe Lincoln. This week we will be noticing these presidents as we study coins.

Save the date...March 25th will be our Kindergarten Folk dance performance and you do not want to miss this!! More information to come.

Another Month Goes By!

Now that we are back in the swing of things....I will share what we have been up to. In science we have been studying Water and all the different ways water can move. The students made a fountain and learned that water goes down and water flows. They learned about how they can control the way that water moves by using clay and creating a path. Tomorrow we will be learning about what sinks and what floats. In math we continue to learn about teen numbers, the partners of ten and extending more complicated patterns. Our writing has focused on using color words to add details in our writing to describe things. We also wrote about our goals for the year.
Have a great weekend! Go Chargers!
